Why You Should Consider Getting A Pen Pal and a Few Helpful Hints

A Pen Pal is ideal if you want to feel less isolated.  It makes you feel wanted by promoting a sense of community, it heals the soul.

Many people are intimidated by starting a friendship with a stranger.  I understand this. But the good by far outweighs that initial hesitation. Many people are afraid of water. But those who swim get to have hours of fun at the beach, lakes, and pools. Think of all the sharing and connecting you can do, at a time when it is convenient for you as you are sitting by your computer.

If you enjoy friendships, then you must start somewhere. Every human relationship began with two
unfamiliar souls getting to know each other. Think of your first correspondence as putting your toes
into the water. It’s the beginning of an adventure!

Here are a few tips that will enhance your Pen Pal experience:

  • Be upfront and tell your Pen Pal partner of your expectations: the average length of your communication and the frequency that you hope to achieve is essential.  While your commitment is not a contract, such a mutual understanding helps cement the friendship and the experience.
  • Suggest the themes you wish to talk about.  While you do not want to set up any barriers, we all have topics we want to stay clear of, such as religion or sex.  Avoid itemizing your demands and having a checklist, or anything that makes the task of penpalling into a chore. Writing to your PenPal is a fun activity.
  • A good Pen Pal communication encourages conversation. Don’t dominate the conversation and make it all about you. Don’t be judgmental. Make believe your PenPal is sitting next to you and you are both enjoying your favorite drink.

The last (but certainly not least) thing let’s talk about safety.  It should always be a primary concern and be on your mind, especially when connecting with your Pen Pal the first few times.

Be aware of scammers. If you are a MatureAging Pen Pal customer, contact us (at www.MatureAging.com) as soon as you sense that something is not right.  Our Pen Pal subscribers are not permitted to solicit business, and certainly not ask for money.  Though we check the profiles for authenticity, some con artists may get through our vetting process.

You may want to use a fake first name and last name, should you wish to publicize it, until you trust your Pen Pal partner.

Never divulge any financial information.  Bank and credit/debit card details should never be shared, regardless of your confidence in your PenPal colleague.  While it is Ok to divulge your city, I suggest you keep your exact physical address private as well.

Have any thoughts on the best ways to connect with your Pen Pal? Share them with us at www.MatureAging.com, and we may post them (only after getting your permission) in a future edition.
Till next time,

Josh
