5 Ways Seniors Can De-Stress Drug Free

We call it stress but it could be fear or anxiety or other forms of psychological distress.  This mental pain can manifest itself into real physical pain such as an increase of arthritic pain and general aches and pains.

The feeling of wanting to flee from a predator has always been with humans. But such feelings, at times, consume us.  They usually appear whenever we feel the pressure that we need to take care of something now. The matter that only we can complete just can’t wait.

The medical profession tends to treat stress – or whatever label you wish to attach to it – with opiates.   But we all know the risks such “fixes” carry: it can lead to death or, at the very least, an over-reliance of opiates, ending in an addiction to the drug. When do you consider yourself “hooked” to the drug?

In this short blog, several suggestions (in alphabetical order) for drug-free stress reduction are recommended.  As always, consult with your medical professionals before attempting them. Acupuncture and Yoga The evidence for non-Western-type remedies is inconclusive, but some swear that it eases the pain of stress. Start with gentle forms of yoga and an introductory regiment to acupuncture.

Exercise not only loosens stiff joints, but also triggers the production of the body’s own pain relievers. Walk, bike, or play tag with the grandkids.  You need to move to reduce your stress level. Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT). This form of psychotherapy helps patients identify and change unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors. Reduce the traffic jam in your head by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones

Meditation: It tends to quiet the pain-processing region of the brain. Even by paying attention to your breathing you will reduce your stress level.

Stop checking your devices for e-mail and alerts, especially if you have an angry boss.  Also, reduce (or, better yet, eliminate) smoking and drinking sugar-laden sweet drinks. Get into the habit of taking a hot bath or shower before bed.

Pills will always be out there. But before you take that route, why not try some – if not all – of these drug-free solutions to what afflicts almost 75% of all Americans.

Till next time,
